Prevention of accidents in babies and children

When children begin to walk, they are exposed to many risks that can lead to a accident injury. Parents must protect our home to prevent accidents in the kitchen, in the bathroom, in the bedroom, in the living room or in the car.Jose Carlos Garcia Yonte, coordinator of the Training Courses of Red Cross, in Madrid, advises us on the general rules that we must follow to prevent accidents at home with children.

How can we prevent accidents in the kitchen?
The kitchen is not a safe place for children. The first measure would be to apply a locking system to the kitchen door so that the child cannot access alone. This locking system must also be installed on the cabinet doors, since they usually contain cleaning products that are toxic, as well as food or parts that should not be ingested due to the danger of poisoning or choking.

Also, be careful with the kiln connected, as the light at your viewing height attracts your curiosity. Touching the door, which will be very hot, can burn your hands. It is important to remember that a burn is always going to be considered a very serious injury, so you have to go to the emergency room immediately.

What should we keep in mind when the baby begins to walk?
Faced with this situation, our mission as parents must be to prevent the child's falls. To do this, keep the area where the child is going to move clear of obstacles, avoid slippery floors and, if the house has stairs, place a barrier so that the child does not have access to the steps. Windows must be protected so that children do not open them. It is advisable to warn them not to climb on the furniture because they can fall and suffer severe trauma.

How should we protect the child's room to avoid accidents?
Your bedroom is your territory par excellence. It is their place of play and to avoid accidents, the shelves, furniture and all the objects that are around the room must be properly fixed so that the child does not throw them and they can fall on him.

How can we protect our child in the bathroom?
In the bathtub it is advisable to place an anti-slip mat to prevent falls, as well as a footstool for older children, which serves as a step to easily enter and exit the bathtub. As a precaution, it is important that all sharp objects, such as scissors or razors, are out of the reach of children. This same measure should be applied to all personal hygiene products such as shampoos, gels, creams or colognes, as the child could ingest them.

What precautions should we take to avoid accidents in the classroom?
In addition to paying attention to the safety of furniture, interior doors and cabinets, precautions must be taken with electrical appliances such as television or music equipment and, consequently, with the sockets that are in the living room, the cables and all items that may have electrical current. The plugs must be protected so that the child cannot put their fingers in.

In the car, how should we position the child to protect him in the event of a collision?
It is essential to place the child in an approved seat with a child restraint system that adapts perfectly to their weight, age and height. It must be well anchored to the seat of the vehicle with the isofix system or the car belts. The harnesses of the chair should support the child properly without being baggy.

For safety, it is advisable for children to travel in the rear seats, behind the driver or passenger, never in the center to avoid being thrown by the front window. In the case of riding in the passenger seat, the baby carrier must be placed in the opposite direction to travel.
